I have found this - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/2122713.stm

And I have a friend at the BBC trying to dig up the radio package...

Pozhivem, uvidem (uslishem, to est)

I remember when Голубое Сало (Blue Lard) was published. I worked in the BBC Moscow bureau and we interviewed Sorokin and made a radio package on his work for Radio 4 with Caroline Wyatt (who now hosts PM on R4 on Saturdays).

Times change. Not just in Russia: it is hard to imagine a report like that being commissioned by mainstream BBC news today. Perhaps I'm wrong. Надеюсь, что ошибаюсь.

That’s fantastic, Christopher! Your comment made me happy! I wish I could find that interview somewhere, huh.

Спасибо большое, что прочитали.

P.S. Тоже надеюсь!

Never would have known of Sorokin without this. Excited to add him to my list

Where would you suggest someone start with Sorokin if they’re a total noob to his work?

Probably “Blizzard” and short stories. “The Norm”, his first novel, or “The Queue”- both are about Soviet life. “Their Four Hearts” is probably the most unhinged thing you can find anywhere. The Oprichnik could be a start as well, it’s relatively short and accessible. “Telluria” is sci-fi/dystopian/fantasy with a lot of style games, should be fun.

Perfect, thank you!

Very interesting

I personally stopped reading Sorokin after finishing a big tome of his works (didn't contain any mentioned here)-I felt a dark loop it's sending me into; I'm usually okay with dark, but some distant star is needed; I decided not to read more, quite concsciously-it might be that this post of yours will make me re-consider that decision, made a long while ago.

Also. so, comparison with oprichnina is also not my idea? lol. it seems like I've no original thought in my mind.

It’s very dark sometimes yeah. The most recent one was mentioned having some glimpses of hope at the end tho! Haven’t read it yet myself.
