I like that you replaced toothache with backache by the way. It seems appropriate. I imagine people back then had less access to dentists, so toothaches were more common. And people today spend more time sitting down, which makes backaches more common.
Best extended riff I have seen on Substack! When you started this I looked for an original to compare in googlebooks and the Constance Garnett version sufficed. Any opinion on her? Frickin prolific! Screenplay worthy. You too! Audio version plz. Thanks Van(etc.)

I have read some translation and I didn’t like it but I don’t remember which one. it wasn’t bad but it sounded off to me, but even in “good” ones I tend to stumble upon a word which translation annoys me, sooo. Now I skimmed through Garnett one very quickly and it seems okay, there’re some interesting choices.

Fantastic adaptation of Dostoevsky's voice to internet-age consciousness. The paingasm concept really captures how performative suffering has become, especially online where we dunno if we're genuine or just spiraling for content. What got me is how the endless search for root causes before acting basically describes every twitter thread I've seen, where analysis paralysis turns into shitposting becauseits the only action left that doesn't need justification.
that'll happen soon-ish! I've been working on a cover and such. I want to play fair, so I'll finish Part I first, then I need to finish Part II draft in full because it requires more consistency in translation/adaptation between the chapters. Once the draft is done and I'm confident I can finish everything by the date X, I can create the title and open preorders! There'll also be Part III, which is my meta-commentary + historical detail of how FM wrote and published it originally. Maybe it'll be Part 0 (not sure what's Roman numeral for zero, probably nothing because they were stupid hehehe) instead of Part III but I'm not a fan of Prefaces. thank you for the interest Alex, and cheers!
